IoT use cases implemented quicker with multi-sensors


Multi-sensors are an extension of the sensory organs of employees in the factory of the future. The new SCD Sensor from Bosch Rexroth concentrates several sensors at once on the smallest space possible, and wirelessly transfers the measured data to higher level IT systems reliably for several years. The technicians of tomorrow therefore already have diverse options to collect data more cost-effectively and implement IoT use cases quicker and easier.

Digital multimeter: Acquire important information on the go

The SCD (Sense Connect Detect) product name illustrates the user’s ability to acquire important information for IoT projects in next to no time or to reveal acute improvements in production. For the first calculations the sensor is simply attached temporarily with adhesive or cable ties on the object to be monitored, to record the temperature of a motor housing or the vibrations of a tool holder for an hour, for example. The information can be visualized immediately via the app and exported to Excel as required. Production planning or maintenance then evaluates the situation. If the values are outside of the normal range, countermeasures can be introduced in good time before a failure occurs. If the result is not clear, further sensors can be added or repositioned at any time.

Continuous data collection with IoT gateway

The SCD can also be connected wirelessly with an IoT gateway to record data over longer periods, to be evaluated as part of continuous improvements via an on-premises or cloud-based analysis solution. Typical use cases for this scenario range from status-based maintenance to predictive maintenance, or a cross-plant and site performance comparison. The availability of the SCD also enables Bosch Rexroth to offer complete end-to-end solutions from one single source – from durable multi-sensors to wireless data collection and transmission via the IoT gateway, to local or cloud-based data analysis and evaluation.

Joint use case development with customers

Together with its customers, Bosch Rexroth is currently developing specific practice-related use cases with the sensor. Machine manufacturers, for example, can then benefit from insights into the commissioning of new systems, in order to accelerate them. Users in turn are enabled to identify quality-critical anomalies in production ad-hoc or long term. By simply sticking the sensor on, fans can be checked for overheating, or feed movements can be examined for damaging vibrations. Magnetic field measurements enable the documentation of motor running times and power consumption. In logistics, the acceleration value can detect a component falling down or a machine crash. In the future, however, an SCD could also make non-smart products clearly identifiable and save selected life cycle data.

With this sensor Bosch Rexroth has built another bridge to the efficient IT connection of existing plant and machinery. Customers benefit from an effective product that optimally meets market requirements, because the expertise and experience from both fields – automation and IoT – were integrated into the development here.
