Smart Centrifuge Control with ctrlX AUTOMATION – Precise Liquid Separation with Adaptive Sensor Technology

01/23/2026

In industrial processing, many applications require precise and reliable control systems. One key process is the automated separation of liquid mixtures, which plays a crucial role in various industries. Centrifuge machines are used to efficiently separate different liquid phases by applying high rotational speeds and centrifugal forces. Depending on the industry, specific requirements must be met:

  • Environmental technology, such as oil-water separation in recycling plants or sludge dewatering in wastewater treatment.

  • Food and beverage industry, for example, separating milk into skim milk and cream or removing fruit pulp from juices.

  • Chemical industry, including solvent separation in production processes or purification of process liquids.

To achieve optimal separation, the machine must be precisely controlled and continuously monitored. This involves adjusting drum speed, regulating the inflow of the mixture, and controlling the discharge of separated phases—all in a fully automated process.

Modern sensor technology ensures real-time monitoring and evaluation of the separation results. Density measurement, fill level detection, and pressure monitoring allow the system to determine exactly when the liquids are fully separated, ensuring a smooth transition to the next process step. This leads to higher efficiency, consistent product quality, and reliable system operation.

The centrifuge is controlled using components from the ctrlX AUTOMATION portfolio, combining precise speed regulation, sensor integration, and seamless system communication to ensure efficient liquid separation. ctrlX CORE manages the control process, processes sensor data in real-time, and regulates both the feed and discharge of separated liquids. Programming can be done flexibly, either using classic PLC languages via CODESYS or graphical programming environments such as Node-RED, allowing for easy adaptation to different applications and seamless integration into existing automation systems.

Speed control is handled via a frequency converter, which continuously provides feedback and dynamically adjusts the rotation speed based on the medium. High speeds of up to 5,000 RPM are ideal for light liquids such as milk fat, while medium speeds around 3,000 RPM are suited for oil-water separation. Lower speeds of approximately 1,500 RPM are used for heavier substances like sludge. This adaptive speed regulation ensures consistent separation performance with optimized energy consumption.

Various sensors are connected through the ctrlX I/O system to monitor and regulate the separation process with precision. A density sensor detects phase boundaries and controls the discharge, while a level sensor monitors drum capacity. A pressure sensor ensures optimal discharge conditions, and a flow sensor regulates the inflow of liquid mixtures. These sensors provide real-time data, allowing the process to be automatically optimized and kept stable.

Thanks to open communication standards such as OPC UA, MQTT, Modbus TCP, and Profinet, the control system can be easily integrated into SCADA, MES, or PLC environments. Additionally, ctrlX HMI enables the development of customized control and visualization solutions. By combining hardware and software, web-based interfaces can be created to provide an intuitive way to monitor and manage the machine.

This makes the centrifuge a flexible and intelligently controlled machine, seamlessly integrating into modern automation environments.
