High-Speed Tandem Press Transfer

05/18/2026

In large-scale press lines, the transfer system is often the primary bottleneck, forcing the entire line to wait. Traditional single-bar transfer systems are constrained by the long, empty return path after placing a part. Maximizing throughput requires a more intelligent automation approach to reduce this waiting time.

This powerful transfer system uses a single, robust compact module CKR-280 with a dual belt drive, which features two independently toothed-belt driven carriages on a single main X-axis. On each of these carriages, a vertical compact module acts as the lifting axis, providing the motion for the end-of-arm tooling. This creates two independent part handlers on a shared track.

Controlled by the highly responsive automation platform ctrlX AUTOMATION, the system executes a "leap-frogging" motion. As one carrier places a panel into Press B, the second carrier is already moving to pick the next panel from Press A, allowing the press line to cycle faster.

 Key Features & Benefits

  • Reduced Transfer Time & Increased Line Throughput
By eliminating the non-productive time of an empty return path, this dual-carrier design significantly shortens the transfer portion of the cycle. This reduces the waiting time of the entire press line, directly boosting overall production output. The stability of the system is founded on our industry-proven Bosch Rexroth high performance ball rail systems. Integrated into the compact modules, these robust components ensure precise and repeatable placement under high-dynamic conditions. Our LinSelect software validates the sizing of all mechatronic components to guarantee the required service life for your specific application.

  • Faster Cycles Through Advanced Position Control
In high-speed transfers, cycle time is lost waiting for the system to settle. The DriveX platform’s advanced control algorithms are designed to minimize position overshoot. By precisely controlling the motion profile and actively damping vibrations, the system hits the target "in-position window" cleanly and holds it, allowing the next press cycle to begin without delay.

  • Efficient & Simplified Drive System via Common DC Bus
While the simultaneous motion profile in press transfers offers less potential for power supply downsizing, the common DC bus architecture remains the superior choice. Its primary benefits here are reduced complexity and efficient energy management. A single power supply and shared busbar connection minimize hardware, reduce wiring, and shrink the required cabinet space compared to three standalone drives. Furthermore, regenerative energy from synchronized braking is managed centrally and efficiently across the bus.

Build your Application with Bosch Rexroth Products

Integrating reliable components is crucial for the optimal automation of press lines. Rexroth’s components, including linear axes (compact modules), linear guides, screw drives, ctrlX controllers, and aluminum profiles, work together seamlessly. This combination uses a dual-carrier system to eliminate non-productive empty travel, which drastically shortens transfer times and directly increases the overall output of the press line.
